Mel Gibson is going behind the camera for the fifth installment of Warner Bros. Lethal Weapon after the July 2021 death of director 91-year old Richard Donner, who’d directed all the films since 1987. Since then the movie has been in limbo. Donner was planning to do the fifth and the movie was in development for years on and off for years. Richard Wenk is writing the latest draft (He wrote the Equalizer movies.) Procuers will be Dan Lin of Rideback, Donner wife Lauren Donner Schuler and Mel Gibson. Jonathon Eirich of Rideback and Derek Hoffman of The Donner’ Company’s will exec produce.  Gibson said Donner “was developing the screenplay and he got pretty far along with it. And he said to me one day, ‘Listen, Kid, if I kick the bucket, you will do it.’ And I said, ‘shut up’. He did indeed pass away but he did ask me to do it and at that time, I didn't say anything. He said it to his wife and to the studio and the producer. So, I will be directing the first one." (London's The Sun)
