Walt Disney Animation Studios Celebrates Extraordinary Fan Response +

Three Oscar® Nominations with Expanded Theatrical Footprint

Walt Disney Animation Studios welcomes fans back to theaters this holiday weekend to celebrate the positive impact the film has had on audiences worldwide. “What fills my heart most is how people are connecting with the story,” said producer Yvett Merino, who is the first Latina nominated for an Academy Award in the animated feature film category. “People are embracing the diversity of these characters—how they look, who they are, their personalities and the role each character plays in the family. It is humbling how people are not only seeing themselves represented in this film, but they are seeing their sisters, their brothers, their cousins, their abuelas. They are seeing their family story being told in ways they have never experienced before.”

The studio’s 60th animated feature received three Oscar® nominations, including best animated feature (Jared Bush, Byron Howard, Yvett Merino, Clark Spencer), best original score (Germaine Franco) and best original song, “Dos Oruguitas” (music and lyric by Lin-Manuel Miranda).

The music from “Encanto” continues to resonate with fans. The Encanto soundtrack and song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” have topped the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 simultaneously for three consecutive weeks. Seven songs from the soundtrack are on the Hot 100 chart. Miranda is the first songwriter from a film soundtrack with simultaneous No. 1 songs on the Hot 100 with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and the Oscar-nominated “Dos Oruguitas” on the Latin Streaming Songs chart. “Dos Oruguitas” has topped the Latin Streaming Songs chart for five consecutive weeks and maintains the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Latin Digital Song Sales charts for the third consecutive week.   The R.I.A.A. announced the following certifications today:   Encanto Original Motion Picture Soundtrack – Gold Album, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” & “Surface Pressure” – Gold & Platinum Digital Singles, “The Family Madrigal” & “What Else Can I Do” – Gold Digital Singles.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto” tells the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia, in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift from super strength to the power to heal—every child except one, Mirabel (voice of Stephanie Beatriz). But when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel decides that she, the only ordinary Madrigal, might just be her exceptional family’s last hope. The film is directed by Jared Bush (co-director “Zootopia”) and Byron Howard (“Zootopia,” “Tangled”), co-directed by Charise Castro Smith (writer “The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez”), and produced by Yvett Merino and Clark Spencer; the screenplay is by Castro Smith and Bush. “Encanto” features original songs by Emmy®, GRAMMY® and Tony Award® winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”); Germaine Franco (“Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” “Little,” “Tag”) composed the original score. “Encanto” opened in U.S. theaters on Nov. 24,2021,launched on Disney+ on Dec. 24, 2021, and is now available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital.
