Director Ryan Coogler’s masterpiece is one of the best examples of flicking in 2025. Set in 1930’s Mississippi, during the days of the Ku Lux Clan, we see the black community in a different light and trying to just survive. Twin brothers, both played by Michael B. Jordan outstandingly well, command the film with a top notch cast across the board. Jordan surprises us all with his performance as he plays the Smokestack twins who are now headed back home after World War 1, after a stop in Chicago where they became gangsters to open a business. In their hometown now, they set out to open a juke joint but as they open a scene filled with blues music goes from music and fun to blood and havoc as vampires arrives. The movie starts by letting us know who the characters are, but it turns to mayhem and lots of blood. The scenes are sexy and captivating and you can’t take your eyes off them. You mind can never wander for a minute with the riveting acting. But it’s also the cinematography that stands out. The cinematography by Autumn Durald Arkapaw is outstanding. The casting is powerful with Delroy Lindo and Jordan taking their roles to another level. This movie is so well performed in fact, and shot and planned out so well, it really stands out. Expect Sinners to get an Oscars nom for cinematography hands down. Once you walk into the theater, you are mesmerized scene by scene and as vampires arrive at the party things turn so dark you are so entrenched in the film, you loose a sense of reality. The more blood comes out, the more you watch and loose all sense of time.
